A Brief History of Kampong Glam

Kampong Glam is one of Singapore’s most colourful and historic neighbourhoods. Today, it’s famous for its vibrant streets, boutique shops, and lively cafés, but its roots go back centuries. Originally, Kampong Glam was designated as a settlement for the Malay and Muslim communities by Sir Stamford Raffles in the early 19th century.

Sultan Mosque

The area grew around the majestic Sultan Mosque, which remains the heart of Kampong Glam today. Built in 1824 for Sultan Hussein, the first sultan of Singapore, the mosque has been beautifully preserved and remains an active place of worship. Its golden dome and striking minarets are an iconic symbol of the neighbourhood.

Arab Street

Arab Street is lined with shops selling textiles, carpets, traditional clothing, and souvenirs, reflecting the area’s rich trading history. It’s a great place to wander, shop, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere that has defined Kampong Glam for centuries.

Haji Lane

Haji Lane is a narrow street famous for its colourful murals, independent boutiques, quirky cafés, and bars – a perfect spot for photography and exploring Singapore’s artsy side. It’s one of the most Instagram-friendly streets in the city and a favourite among locals and tourists alike.

Bussorah Street

Bussorah Street, just next to the mosque, is filled with Middle Eastern restaurants and tea houses, offering traditional dishes and a lively atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal or simply relax while watching the neighbourhood go by.

Malay Heritage Centre

For culture lovers, the Malay Heritage Centre is a must-visit. Housed in a restored palace, it tells the story of the Malay community in Singapore through exhibits, guided tours, and cultural events. It’s a great way to understand the history behind the sights you see in Kampong Glam.

Heritage Shophouses

Along the way, you’ll also spot heritage shophouses with ornate facades, reflecting the traditional architecture that has survived over 150 years. These colourful buildings are now home to cafés, boutiques, and galleries, perfectly blending the old and new.
